The government of the province of Buenos Aires approved the Institutional Strategic Plan for the Conservation of Native Forests in the Martín García Island Natural Reserve, formalized by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Environment.
The initiative seeks to ensure the protection and sustainable management of these forest ecosystems, considered key for biodiversity and environmental balance.
Legal and regulatory framework
The plan is part of a set of national and provincial regulations:
- National Constitution (art. 41) and Buenos Aires Constitution (art. 28): recognize the right to a healthy environment and the obligation to preserve it.
- General Environmental Law No. 25.675: establishes objectives of prevention and ecological, economic, and social sustainability.
- National Law No. 26.331 on Native Forests: sets minimum standards for environmental protection.
- Provincial Law No. 14.888: regulates the territorial organization of native forests.
- Law No. 12.103: declares Martín García Island as a protected area.
- Resolution 523/2019 of the OPDS and guidelines of the Cofema: define criteria for conservation and sustainable management plans.
Ecological importance
The native forests of the island are interdependent ecosystems that include soil, water, climate, and biodiversity. Their conservation ensures:
- Water regulation and soil protection.
- Habitat for birds, reptiles, and native plant species.
- Essential environmental services for the region.

Historical and cultural value
Martín García Island has a strong historical value:
- Discovered in 1516 by Juan Díaz de Solís, it is named after a deceased crew member.
- It was fortified by Pedro de Cevallos, the first Viceroy of the Río de La Plata.
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento planned the city of Argirópolis there.
- It served as a prison for political figures: Hipólito Yrigoyen, Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear, Juan Domingo Perón, and Arturo Frondizi were confined on the island.
Landscapes and biodiversity
The island features coasts formed by sediments from the Río de La Plata, covered with reeds and flood-prone grasslands. Inhabitants include:
- Birds: coots, herons, ducks, snail kites, water hens, red-crested cardinals, and verdones.
- Reptiles: tegu lizards.
- Vegetation: senecios, marcela, espinillos, and flood-prone shrubs.
With 9 environments in 1,800 square meters, the island is one of the most attractive reserves to visit in the province.
The approval of the conservation plan on Martín García Island reinforces the commitment of the province of Buenos Aires to the protection of native forests and the sustainable management of protected areas. The measure not only preserves biodiversity but also protects a space of great historical and cultural value, consolidating a conservation model that integrates nature, memory, and sustainable development.
