Used electric cars gain ground in Spain due to rising oil prices from the war in Iran

The conflict in the Middle East and the consequent rise in oil prices are accelerating changes in the behavior of Spanish consumers. According to the report Electricar VO 2026, prepared by coches.net and the employers’ association Ganvam, interest in used electric cars skyrocketed by +73% compared to March 2025 and +26.2% compared to the previous month, consolidating a trend towards mobility options less dependent on fossil fuels.

Constantly declining prices

The average offer price of a used electric car in Spain continues to decrease:

  • First quarter 2026: €30,588 (-1.74% year-on-year).
  • First quarter 2025: €31,135.
  • First quarter 2024: €33,755.

In just two years, the cost has reduced by more than €3,100, and since the record in November 2022 (€37,228), the decrease exceeds €6,500. The regions with the largest declines are Asturias (-10.6%), Galicia (-7.9%), Aragón (-7.5%), and Navarra (-5.2%). In contrast, La Rioja records an increase of +11.9%.

Rising sales

Sales of used electric cars grew by +48.8% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Highlights include:

  • Semi-new (less than 3 years): +103%.
  • Between 3 and 5 years: +48.9%.
  • Between 5 and 8 years: +38%.
  • Between 8 and 10 years: +59%.
  • Between 10 and 15 years: +40.7%.

This growth shows that the market is no longer limited to the newest models but encompasses all age ranges, consolidating consumer confidence in the durability of electric vehicles.

Best-selling models

The ranking of second-hand electric cars in Spain is led by the Tesla Model 3, with 647 units sold (+17.9%). It is followed by:

  • FIAT 500: 311 units (+8.7%).
  • Renault Zoe: 311 units (+15.6%).
  • Polestar 2: 274 units (+586.4%), the largest increase on the list.
  • BMW iX1: 185 units (+184.6%), breaking into the top.

This scenario reflects both the consolidation of leading brands and the emergence of new players in the electric market.

Context and perspectives

The report emphasizes that the oil crisis can be a lever to accelerate electrification, but warns that it is essential to accompany this trend with the national fleet renewal plan contemplated in the Sustainable Mobility Law, to ensure that all families can access more efficient vehicles.

Furthermore, the reduction in prices and the increase in the supply of used electric vehicles contribute to democratizing access to sustainable mobility, reducing the gap between combustion and electrified vehicles.

The combination of declining prices, rising sales, and the pressure of the international energy market is consolidating the second-hand electric car as an increasingly attractive alternative in Spain. If the war in Iran prolongs oil volatility, the trend shift towards electric mobility could intensify even further, marking a turning point in the automotive market.
