Andean condor rescued in La Rioja after poisoning: concern for a cultural and key symbol still at risk

An Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) was found with symptoms of poisoning near National Route 40, at the height of Cuesta de Miranda, in Chilecito, La Rioja province.

The discovery occurred on February 22, when officers from the Argentine National Gendarmerie and personnel from the provincial Environment detected the bird on the shoulder of kilometer 3830.

The animal showed signs compatible with a poisoning condition, so the rescue protocol was activated. It was preventively captured and transferred to the city of La Rioja for clinical evaluation and veterinary control.

Status and Possible Causes

Authorities reported that the condor was placed under observation to determine the specific causes of the suspected poisoning.

It is not ruled out that the condition is linked to the ingestion of some contaminated element, such as toxic baits or remains of chemical substances present in the environment.

Ecological and Cultural Importance

The Andean condor is one of the most representative birds of the mountain range and is protected by environmental regulations in Argentina. Its role is key:

  • Ecological role: acts as a scavenger, accelerating the decomposition of carcasses and reducing the risk of diseases.
  • Cultural value: considered a sacred bird by indigenous communities, it symbolizes strength, freedom, and connection between sky and earth.
  • Tourism and biodiversity: areas like the Quebrada del Cóndor in La Rioja are privileged points for its sighting, promoting conservation through responsible tourism.

Conservation in La Rioja

The province actively works on the protection of this species through:

  • Andean Condor Conservation Program (PCCA): coordinated with the Bioandina Argentina Foundation and the Buenos Aires Ecopark, includes monitoring and release of specimens in the Quebrada del Cóndor.
  • Rescue and rehabilitation: the Yastay rescue center plays a fundamental role in the recovery of condors injured by poisoning or natural causes.
  • Education and awareness: campaigns against the illegal use of toxic baits, the main threat to the species.

A Joint Action

The intervening organizations highlighted the quick action of Gendarmerie and Environment, which allowed the animal to be safeguarded and ensured its specialized care. The results of the veterinary studies are awaited to know the evolution of the bird and define the steps to follow in its recovery process.

The case reflects the vulnerability of the Andean condor to contamination and the use of toxins in the environment. The quick response of the authorities reaffirms the importance of conservation programs. Additionally, the need to strengthen social awareness about the protection of this emblematic species of the Andes.
