In which areas of Argentina can we see yacarés?

The **yacaré** is a reptile from the family of **caimans and crocodiles**, characterized by its robust body and hard scales that [allow it to camouflage in its habitat](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/en-una-isla-de-colombia-habita-la-unica-especie-de-lagartija-azul/). Its name comes from Guarani, a language spoken in Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, and means “the one who sticks out his head”.

Habitat and Distribution of the Yacaré in Argentina

In Argentina, they mainly inhabit the **Mesopotamia region** in the northeast of the country. There are two species: the overo or ñato (Caiman latirostris) and the black (Caiman yacare). These reptiles are the **top predators of rivers, marshes, and lagoons**, feeding on fish, waterfowl, and small mammals.

The overo is the largest species, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length and weighing between 80 and 90 kg. The black yacaré, although smaller, measures between 1.2 and 1.4 meters and weighs approximately 50 kg.

Yacaré Project: Conservation and Recovery

The **Yacaré Project**, based at La Esmeralda Farm in Santa Fe, has achieved remarkable results in the conservation of the overo, removing it from the endangered species list. This [breeding and release program](https://noticiasambientales.com/animales/liberaron-tortugas-bebes-para-salvar-a-una-especie-en-peligro-de-extincion-en-que-consiste-el-plan/) has contributed to the increase in yacaré populations, helping to reduce poaching and promote awareness of their importance.

Moreover, the project conducts scientific research in areas such as immunology and the impact of agrochemicals, establishing itself as an international reference in species conservation.
