Mendoza: Cyclists save horse from falling off cliff

A group of cyclists who were exploring mountain trails in the Portinaris region, in the Tunuyán department, province of Mendoza, had an unexpected experience.

While traversing the paths of Cajón Grande, the cyclists encountered a horse in danger, on the verge of falling off a cliff.

Quick and effective intervention by the cyclists to save the horse

As seen in the viral video, the horse was loaded with various objects, including a gas cylinder, bags, and a disc, putting it in a precarious situation. The weight and rugged terrain compromised its stability, endangering its life.

Confronted with the sad scene, the cyclists decided to intervene promptly. After freeing the horse from its burden, they managed to calm it down and set it free, allowing it to continue its journey under safer conditions.

What to do if you see an injured or abandoned wild animal?

The first step is to notify the authorities – such as park rangers or the police – and avoid touching the animal, let alone taking it home to protect it or try to heal it. Because the animal’s reactions are unknown, as well as the type of ailment, and you are not in a position to provide the best treatment.

The Fauna department of the Renewable Natural Resources Directorate warns about the dangers of privately owning non-domestic animals – whether native or exotic – which is prohibited by law.

How to report animal abuse in Mendoza?

For reports of abuse of domestic animals, contact the Fiscal Office in your jurisdiction or get in touch with the Zoonosis department of your municipality.

For reports of abuse of wild animals, contact:

  • Fiscal Office in your jurisdiction
  • Department of Wildlife of the Renewable Natural Resources Directorate
  • Call 261–3853400 from 8 am to 1 pm, Monday to Friday
