Native fauna: a southern elephant seal is rescued and released in Ensenada

The Ministry of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires, through the Marine Wildlife Rescue Network, activated an emergency operation after the presence of a southern elephant seal was recorded in the Isla Santiago area, in the Ensenada district, just 500 meters from the Río de la Plata.

Specialists from the Temaikèn Foundation traveled to the site to assess the specimen, which is presumed to have entered through a stream or channel after becoming disoriented and straying from its natural habitat.

Successful Transfer and Release

After examining its health and nutrition status, the veterinary team determined its urgent rescue and transfer to the Atlantic coast. The animal was transported to San Clemente del Tuyú, where an operation was coordinated with the park rangers of the Rincón de Ajó Natural Reserve to achieve its successful release into the sea during the early morning.

Recommendations for Finding Wildlife

The Buenos Aires Environment Minister, Daniela Vilar, emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife and shared a key protocol for the community:

  • Do not approach or attempt to touch the animal.

  • Do not wet it.

  • Immediately notify authorities and specialized teams.

In conclusion, the Ministry highlighted the coordinated work between public agencies, specialists, and territorial teams, a fundamental synergy to ensure safe interventions and protect the biodiversity of the province.
