Santiago del Estero: A solidarity network provides handmade houses and coats to protect stray dogs from the cold.

In response to the low temperatures hitting the capital of Santiago, a group of self-organized individuals has launched a solidarity initiative to protect stray dogs from the cold by handcrafting shelters and providing coats.

So far, they have already distributed 10 shelters and over 100 thermal garments to the “street dogs” in Aguirre Park and nearby areas.

Led by Sofía Bogado —a teacher and rescuer recognized for her work with abandoned cats— the group started organizing through WhatsApp, and with the support of over 150 people, they raised over $400,000 through grassroots efforts. The funds were used to purchase materials such as nylon, fabric, nails, and screws, while wooden pallets were donated by individuals.

Trust networks and territorial action

“The meeting point is my house,” explained Sofía in an interview with Nuevo Diario. “I offered my backyard for the shelters to be built, and one of the girls contributes with her van to distribute them and collect donations.” The process was fast and collaborative: in just a few days, they built the first five shelters, placed them in areas with a high presence of homeless dogs, and went out at night to provide coats to those who accepted help.

The initiative also includes spaying/neutering actions, coordinated with the Zoonosis and Responsible Pet Ownership Program, to reduce unwanted reproduction. Everything else —from logistics to social media communication— is managed voluntarily by group members.

Expanding to new territories in support of street dogs

Thanks to the enthusiasm generated, they are already considering expanding the campaign to the city of La Banda, where a local group aims to replicate the model, but lacks financial support. “We want to donate some shelters and coats to help them get started,” Sofía stated.

Furthermore, they continue to collect materials and receive donations through the alias sofia.b45, the only funding channel for the project. “We are individuals who have joined forces for a common cause: to ensure no dog suffers from the cold,” she concluded.
