United Kingdom: Over 15,000 people propose allowing pets to travel in the cabin to reduce animal stress

The air transport of pets has returned to the center of the environmental and health debate in Europe after citizens in the United Kingdom initiated a petition to allow small dogs and cats to travel in airplane cabins. The initiative seeks to modify the strict British regulations that currently require transporting animals in the hold.

Meanwhile, in countries of the European Union, the United States, Canada, and Ireland, there are already systems that authorize the entry of small pets into the cabin under specific conditions. There, current vaccination, microchip, health checks and a reduced weight that generally does not exceed eight kilos are required.

Additionally, some airlines like Vueling exclusively allow cabin transport for dogs, cats, non-raptor birds, and small turtles. In these cases, the animals must remain inside ventilated containers throughout the flight.

United Kingdom maintains strict controls for biosecurity reasons

In contrast to other European countries, the United Kingdom continues to apply much more restrictive regulations. Even small pets must travel as cargo in special compartments of the aircraft.

The campaign led by Eirini Zartaloudi gathered more than 15,000 signatures and opened a debate on the balance between animal welfare and biosecurity. The proposal argues that cabin transport would reduce stress and improve the physical and emotional conditions of pets during international travel.

However, the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has so far ruled out modifying the current legislation. Authorities believe that health checks are safer when animals enter directly into specialized centers outside passenger terminals.

Furthermore, the British government emphasized that it maintains very strict health standards to prevent the entry of diseases such as rabies or parasites like tapeworm. For this reason, only recognized assistance dogs can currently travel with their handlers inside the cabin.

How animal transport in airplanes works

The air transport of pets requires specific international protocols aimed at minimizing physical and emotional risks. Airlines must comply with ventilation, temperature, pressure, and water supply standards established by the International Air Transport Association.

When animals travel in the hold, they do so in pressurized and climatized sectors specially prepared for the transport of living beings. Additionally, containers must ensure stability, ventilation, and enough space for the animal to move comfortably.

Even so, veterinarians and protective organizations warn that many animals experience anxiety, dehydration, or severe stress during long flights. Therefore, they recommend getting them accustomed to the carrier beforehand, avoiding sedation, and conducting veterinary checks before the trip.

A measure that could improve the experience of pets

Specialists in animal welfare consider that allowing cabin travel for small pets could significantly reduce the stress levels associated with isolation and the noise of the hold.

Moreover, the close presence of handlers helps to reduce episodes of anxiety and promotes a more stable response during long journeys. This is especially important in older animals, rescued animals, or those with a history of fear.

On the other hand, constant visual contact allows for the quick detection of signs of physical discomfort, respiratory problems, or emergency situations. Thus, proponents of the initiative argue that the model applied in much of Europe demonstrates that biosecurity and animal welfare can coexist through proper controls.

While the debate continues in the United Kingdom, the discussion also highlights how animal transport is beginning to incorporate environmental and ethical criteria that are increasingly present in international animal protection policies.
