Seven months after its launch, the program **”Adopt a River”**, driven by the **National Water Commission (Conagua)**, shows concrete results in the [cleaning and restoration of waterways](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/nuevo-record-mundial-de-limpieza-voluntaria-de-rios-mas-de-1300-asistentes/) throughout the country.
With the support of **state governments, municipalities, and social sectors**, **180 sanitation days** were carried out in **27 entities**, with the participation of over **38,400 volunteers**.
## Comprehensive Sanitation: Tons of Waste and Recovered Kilometers of Watercourses
**Solid waste, rubble, silt, and abandoned tires** were removed along more than 550 linear km.
The numbers are compelling:
– 1,600 tons of garbage
– 5,000 m³ of rubble
– 17,900 m³ of silt
– 3,377 abandoned tires
These actions allow to **restore the natural flow of water**, **prevent floods**, and **improve the environmental quality** of rivers, many of which run through urban, rural, and agricultural areas.
## Reforestation and Water Balance: 47 Recovered Hectares
**Trees strengthen riparian ecosystems and improve water infiltration**
Additionally, **47 hectares along riverbanks** were reforested, contributing to:
– Improving air quality
– Favoring water infiltration
– Strengthening habitats for wildlife
– Maintaining the ecological balance of watersheds
These actions are key to **restore the functionality of aquatic ecosystems** and **reduce pressure on water resources**.

## Federal Participation: 27 States Committed to River Cleaning
From Baja California to Yucatán, **the effort is national and community-driven**.
Among the involved states are **Aguascalientes, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Puebla, Veracruz, Zacatecas**, among others.
This territorial articulation allows to [strengthen environmental awareness](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/educacion-ambiental-rio-gallegos-construye-un-centro-de-interpretacion-de-flora-y-fauna-en-la-reserva-mata-verde/), **promote sustainable habits**, and **generate community unity** around water conservation.
## Environmental, Social, and Economic Benefits of Clean Rivers
**Water restoration improves biodiversity, public health, and local development**.
– **Habitat for life**: rivers host key species that depend on clean environments
– **Ocean protection**: prevents waste from reaching the sea
– **Drinking water**: improves water quality for human and agricultural consumption
– **Disease reduction**: decreases contaminants and vectors
– **Tourism and recreation**: promotes activities like fishing, hiking, and swimming
– **Economic boost**: energizes the local economy and creates jobs
## Environmental Justice and Right to Water: Commitments Fulfilled
Conagua advances in the objectives of the **National Agreement for the Human Right to Water**.
The actions of “Adopt a River” contribute to fulfilling **commitments 4 and 9** of the national agreement, promoting **multi-sector collaboration** and the **sanitation of basins, rivers, and seas**.
The goal is clear: **bring environmental justice to all the people of Mexico**.
