Amid the sharp increase in deforestation across the north, Misiones maintains the lowest rate in the country

The situation of native forests has once again become the focus of the environmental debate following new data on the increase in deforestation and the loss of vegetation in Argentina. The 2025 annual report by Greenpeace revealed a significant increase in clearings and areas affected by fires.

During the last year, 94,204 hectares were cleared in northern Argentina. The most impacted provinces were Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Formosa, and Salta, regions where the pressure on ecosystems continues to rise.

This figure was compounded by 116,498 hectares affected by forest fires, raising the total loss to 210,702 hectares. Consequently, the degraded area is equivalent to more than ten times the size of the City of Buenos Aires and represents a 40% increase compared to 2024.

Productive expansion, fires, and climate crisis

The survey links the loss of forest with the advance of the agricultural frontier and land use transformation. Additionally, rural real estate speculation appears as another factor accelerating the elimination of natural areas.

At the same time, the recurrence of forest fires intensifies in a climatic context marked by prolonged droughts and extreme temperatures. These conditions favor the spread of fire and hinder the recovery of ecosystems.

Furthermore, the report warns that part of the clearings occurred in areas classified as protected by the National Forest Law. This point reinforces concerns about failures in controls and the effective implementation of the current environmental regulations.

Misiones: a model with a lower deforestation rate

In this regional scenario, the province of Misiones presents different indicators according to the document “State of Deforestation in Misiones”, prepared by the Ministry of Ecology and Renewable Natural Resources of Misiones.

The report indicates that the province retains more than 50% of its area covered by native forest, positioning itself as the jurisdiction with the most protected biodiversity within the Paranaense forest.

Unlike other provinces in northern Argentina, the detected clearings mostly correspond to authorized interventions under territorial planning. Additionally, satellite monitoring and permanent oversight are implemented in the territory.

Fire prevention and environmental planning

One of the central axes of the Misiones model is the comprehensive policy for the prevention and combat of forest fires. For this purpose, investments are made in equipment, infrastructure, and technical training.

The system includes the daily dissemination of a risk map that classifies the probability of fires into low, moderate, high, very high, or extreme levels. Thanks to this tool, critical scenarios are anticipated and operational response is optimized.

Furthermore, actions are especially concentrated in provincial parks and protected natural areas, considered essential for sustaining regional biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Deforestation in Argentina: environmental impacts and future challenges

Deforestation generates consequences that go beyond the loss of trees. The reduction of native forest implies less carbon capture, soil degradation, and alterations in water cycles.

Additionally, it affects biological corridors essential for wildlife and increases the vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events. Therefore, forest conservation becomes a key tool in the face of climate change.

The contrast between the provinces of northern Argentina and Misiones shows that public policies, state control, and territorial planning directly influence environmental conservation. In this context, the future of Argentine forests will depend on decisions that integrate production, biodiversity, and sustainability in the long term.
