Conservation in Ucayali: Study highlights the role of native communities in the regeneration of Amazonian forests in Peru

The native community **Yamino**, of the indigenous **kakataibo** people, recognized for their [responsible forest resource management](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), becomes the setting for a key research project for the [conservation of the Amazon forests](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/).

The study, titled *A Look Towards Conservation*, is led by **Osinfor**, the [National Agrarian University of the Jungle (UNAS)](https://www.gob.pe/unas) and **AIDER**, with the aim of evaluating the [seed tree potential](https://www.gob.pe/unas) in native communities and forest concessions in the **Ucayali** region.

## Evaluation of Native Species and Natural Regeneration
The technical team entered the forest management area of Yamino to [collect data on seed trees](https://www.gob.pe/unas) included in their management plan. A methodology based on [50-meter intervals](https://www.gob.pe/unas) was applied, recording the [presence of fruits](https://www.gob.pe/unas) and [natural regeneration](https://www.gob.pe/unas).

Botanical [samples](https://www.gob.pe/unas) were also taken to identify little-studied species, in order to promote [reforestation](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/innovador-proyecto-ambiental-en-santa-fe-para-recuperar-biodiversidad-la-clave-los-arboles-nativos/), restore [degraded areas](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/innovador-proyecto-ambiental-en-santa-fe-para-recuperar-biodiversidad-la-clave-los-arboles-nativos/), and encourage [sustainable marketing alternatives](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/innovador-proyecto-ambiental-en-santa-fe-para-recuperar-biodiversidad-la-clave-los-arboles-nativos/).

“This alliance strengthens Amazon forest research,” emphasized **Richard Aylas Chuquillanqui**, an Osinfor specialist.

## Young kakataibo: protagonists of forest management
During field activities, **three young kakataibo** actively participated, showing interest in continuing with the [sustainable management of their territory](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/innovador-proyecto-ambiental-en-santa-fe-para-recuperar-biodiversidad-la-clave-los-arboles-nativos/).

Yamino is rated as **”Very good”** in the Osinfor Management Information System (SIGO), reflecting its commitment to [forest regulations](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/) and [responsible community management](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/).

“Learning to recognize species by their leaves motivates me to continue studying,” expressed **Juan Antonio Estrella Torres**, a young man from Yamino.

## Seed Trees as Pillars of Conservation
Regeneration, biodiversity, and future for Amazon communities.

Seed trees are essential for the [natural regeneration of the forest](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/). Their care ensures [seed availability](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), improves [vegetal structure](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), and strengthens [ecological resilience](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/).

From Yamino, a call is made to other communities: “Each community member must care for the seed trees, as the forest and our future depend on them.”

## Yamino: living culture and conservation in the Cordillera Azul
[Sustainable production, community tourism, and biodiversity in the buffer zone](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/)

Located in the [buffer zone of the Cordillera Azul National Park](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), Yamino stands out for its [productive and cultural dynamism](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/).

Crops such as [cocoa and plantain](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), along with [craftsmanship](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), are combined with a firm commitment to [conservation and sustainable forest management](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/), with the support of **AIDER, CIMA**, and other allies.

## Towards Strengthened Forest Governance
The study results will be systematized in a [scientific book](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/) that will highlight the role of seed trees in [forest regeneration](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/). In addition, [academic inputs](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/) will be generated to train [future professionals](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/) and design [reforestation programs](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/).

For **Raúl Carpio** of AIDER, this research is the beginning of a replicable model of [community sustainability](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/bosques-argentinos-cada-vez-menos-protegidos-ante-incendios/) throughout the region.
