Daniela Vilar in Tandil: key report presented to strengthen the protection of the Sierras

The Minister of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires, Daniela Vilar, together with Rogelio Iparraguirre, led a work session in Tandil for the protection of the Sierras.

During the meeting, a team of scientists presented the project “Diagnosis and guidelines for the sustainable management of the Tandil Sierras Natural Protected Area”. This research, developed in conjunction with the Federal Investment Council (CFI), provides for the first time a comprehensive scientific base to guide the conservation policies of this Buenos Aires mountain system.

Environmental challenges identified in the protection of the Sierras

The study analyzes more than two decades of transformations in the region and raises alarms about the main threats to the ecosystem:

  • The loss of more than 4,500 hectares of native vegetation.

  • The fragmentation of the ecosystem and the advance of urban growth on the slopes.

  • The expansion of invasive exotic species.

  • The strong pressure of tourism on sensitive areas.

Strategic guidelines for the future

To mitigate this impact, the report proposes seven key action areas aimed at strengthening environmental management:

  1. Development of the Management Plan for the protected area.

  2. Conservation of the mountain grassland.

  3. Protection of water resources.

  4. Regulation of urban and tourist development.

  5. Promotion of citizen participation and environmental education.

“The Tandil Sierras are a strategic environmental heritage for the entire Province. This diagnosis allows us to make decisions based on scientific evidence to protect biodiversity, ensure access to water, and plan a development that cares for our natural common goods,” highlighted Minister Daniela Vilar.
