From landfill to natural park: the initiative of a group of students from Catamarca seeking to protect the environment

A group of students from the Student Center of Rivera del Valle School in Catamarca presented a project that could become a great contribution to the environment. The initiative called “Natural Park” aims to transform an empty lot, currently used as a dump, into a green space for the community’s recreation.

According to the students and school authorities, the proposal emerged from various surveys highlighting the need for more recreational spaces in the region. They then considered the lot in front of the school building as a viable option, but there was a problem: pollution.

This area accumulates garbage and pests that not only affect environmental health but also the well-being of the students, neighbors, and even the people who visit the nearby dining hall.

The project has already been presented to municipal authorities and is currently in the socialization stage seeking support. Additionally, the project is supported by the “Motivated by Life” program, the Mothers’ Home, as well as various local institutions and neighborhood residents.

A place combining environment and sports

One of the purposes of this natural park is to create a volleyball court and green areas for sports that allow young people to integrate into a healthier environment, aiding in addiction prevention and strengthening mental health.

Community soccer is also a proposal that would be enjoyed in the park, as the activities these students carry out in different institutions could take place in this location, where they would share inclusive activities, camaraderie, and solidarity.

In this sense, both students and educational authorities expressed their desire to turn the dump into a place suitable for everyone, transforming the lot into a symbol of health, hope, and unity for the neighborhoods.

The importance of natural parks

Natural parks located within neighborhoods play a key role in environmental health and social well-being. They act as green lungs that purify the air, regulate temperature, and reduce the impact of urban pollution. Additionally, they serve as a refuge for birds, insects, and small mammals, contributing to conserving biodiversity even in densely populated areas.

These spaces promote community contact with nature, improving physical and mental health. Recreational activities, outdoor exercise, and simply enjoying a green environment reduce stress and enhance a sense of belonging to the neighborhood. They also serve as an educational resource for children and youth to learn about flora, fauna, and environmental conservation.

Maintaining and protecting these parks is a long-term investment for cities. A neighborhood with active green areas is more resilient to climate change, attracts more visitors, and fosters greater social cohesion. Community participation in their care ensures they remain safe, inclusive, and full of life.
