The municipality of Luján has launched a system that will allow for the transfer of 100% of household waste for the closure of the landfill. The operation involves daily shipments to the CEAMSE.
In this way, a key stage begins to close the open-air landfill. Additionally, the measure aims to resolve a historical environmental issue.
For decades, the site generated significant health and social impacts. Therefore, the change represents a turning point for the community.
A logistical system to eliminate local disposal
The new scheme is based on a waste transfer operation. First, the collection trucks transport the waste to a specific point.
Then, the transfer is made to higher capacity units. Each truck can transport approximately 30 tons.
This is equivalent to the load of three traditional urban trucks. With three to four trips daily, the totality of waste is covered. Thus, the complete transfer outside the district is guaranteed.

Key differences with the open-air landfill
Unlike the previous system, there is no accumulation of waste in the territory. The waste does not remain at any point in the city.
This prevents the generation of prolonged contamination hotspots. Additionally, the chosen site is located far from populated areas.
This decision reduces health risks for residents. It also improves environmental conditions in nearby areas. Consequently, one of the main sources of negative impact is eliminated.
What are the environmental benefits of closing the landfill?
The closure of the landfill significantly reduces air pollution. It also decreases the emission of toxic gases derived from burning.
This contributes to improving the quality of life of the population. Additionally, the risks of associated diseases are reduced.
On the other hand, it protects the soil and water resources. The elimination of leachates prevents the degradation of local ecosystems.
In turn, the new system promotes a more efficient management. This lays the foundation for recycling policies and a circular economy. Together, the initiative strengthens a more sustainable environmental model.

Towards a comprehensive conversion of the waste system
The closure of the landfill is complemented by long-term projects. Among them, the Environmental Conversion Center “Laudato Si” stands out.
This space seeks to promote source separation and recycling. It also promotes the inclusion of urban recyclers.
The project aims to consolidate a circular economy in the district. It also plans to improve the traceability of the waste generated.
Its continuity was supported by recent judicial decisions. In this context, it consolidates as a structural solution.
A historic change with environmental projection
The initiative represents the end of more than 60 years of active landfill. This marks a milestone in the local environmental policy.
It also reflects a change in public management of waste. The challenge now will be to sustain and deepen these transformations.
The transition to more sustainable systems requires continuity. It also demands community participation and environmental education.
In this sense, the case of Luján positions itself as a reference. Thus, the district advances towards a healthier and more balanced model.
