Missions promotes the creation of ecological and tourist corridors to protect the jungle and its biodiversity

Governor Hugo Passalacqua received representatives of the Rewilding Argentina Foundation at the Government House to discuss new environmental actions in the province, such as the creation of ecological and tourist corridors. During the meeting, the work that the organization is developing in Misiones was presented, including the acquisition of land in Comandante Andresito.

The main objective is to strengthen the conservation of the Misiones jungle through projects that integrate ecotourism, species recovery, and local development. This alliance between the Government and the foundation seeks to consolidate a sustainable management model of the territory.

The provincial leader highlighted the importance of partnerships between the State and environmental NGOs, considered strategic for protecting biodiversity. He also emphasized the impact of deforestation in the Atlantic Forest and the need to reverse this loss.

Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and the Environmental Promotion Agency participated in the meeting, supporting Rewilding’s initiative. It is expected that the collaboration will generate new opportunities for responsible tourism and active conservation.

The function and importance of ecological corridors

Ecological corridors are strips of land that connect separated natural areas, allowing the movement of animals and the dispersal of plants. Their main function is to maintain the continuity of ecosystems, preventing species isolation and strengthening biodiversity.

In regions like Misiones, these corridors are vital for the survival of the jaguar, the tapir, and numerous birds that depend on large stretches of jungle to live. Habitat fragmentation causes loss of genetic diversity and increases the risk of extinction.

Additionally, corridors act as natural barriers against climate change, as they help conserve forests, capture carbon, and regulate the water cycle. Their implementation promotes environmental resilience and helps maintain essential ecosystem services.

The creation of these spaces also boosts sustainable local economies. Activities such as ecotourism, wildlife observation, and responsible production generate employment without harming the environment, offering an alternative to traditional extractive models.

A model that unites conservation and local development

The Rewilding Argentina Foundation, heir to the legacy of Tompkins Conservation, has been working since 2010 to restore degraded ecosystems and recover native species. Their experience in the Esteros del Iberá demonstrated that conservation can coexist with regional economic growth.

In Misiones, the organization aims to replicate this model, adapted to the Atlantic forest. The 160 hectares acquired in Comandante Andresito add to other nearby protected areas, forming a continuous biological corridor in the Alto Iguazú.

The project is being developed alongside provincial park rangers, Brazilian entities, and local communities. The goal is to recover threatened species, strengthen environmental enforcement, and promote observation tourism based on respect for nature.

With this initiative, Misiones is established as a leader in policies that integrate conservation, education, and sustainable development. Ecological corridors not only connect forests but also wills: those who seek a future where wildlife and society thrive together.
