Electric mobility could experience an unprecedented breakthrough thanks to an innovative development in aluminum-ion batteries. A group of Chinese scientists succeeded in creating a battery promising a longer lifespan, surpassing the degradation and limited autonomy issues that affect current lithium-ion batteries. This discovery could completely change the automotive industry, making electric vehicles more efficient, sustainable, and accessible.
One of the main obstacles of electric cars is the degradation of their batteries, which lose capacity with each charging cycle. However, the new aluminum-ion battery developed in China is able to surpass 10,000 cycles with less than 1% capacity loss. In comparison, current lithium batteries begin to degrade after about 1,000 cycles.
To achieve this, researchers modified the liquid electrolyte, traditionally unstable and corrosive, replacing it with a solid electrolyte combined with a special salt. Additionally, they incorporated a thin protective layer on the electrodes, preventing the formation of aluminum crystals that could reduce efficiency over time.
Advantages over lithium batteries
Lithium-ion batteries present several drawbacks, such as overheating, fire hazards, and high production costs. In contrast, aluminum batteries offer greater thermal stability, eliminating these risks. Moreover, aluminum is a much more abundant and economical material than lithium, which could significantly reduce the price of electric vehicles.
Another advantage of this new technology is its sustainability. While recycling lithium batteries is expensive and complex, aluminum batteries could be recycled more efficiently, reducing the environmental impact of their manufacturing and disposal.
Challenges to overcome
Despite its advantages, aluminum batteries still need to improve their energy density to store more energy in a smaller space. Likewise, they must ensure optimal performance in extreme conditions and intensive use.
The development of this technology could mark a turning point in the automotive industry. As research progresses, we could be closer to a truly sustainable, accessible, and efficient electric mobility.
What are the benefits of electric cars?
Electric cars have many benefits, both for the environment and for savings, including:
Environmental
- Reduce air pollution
- Help mitigate climate change
- Decrease dependence on fossil fuels
- Improve city living quality
- Reduce risks of air pollution
Economic
- Save on fuel
- Save on maintenance
- Have tax advantages.
Driving
- Are more comfortable
- Are smoother and have dynamic acceleration
- Do not emit noise, except at speeds below 30 km/h
- Have an “automatic” transmission that simplifies driving
- Are technologically advanced and safe
They also have other benefits such as fewer mechanical failures, are environmentally friendly, provide more comfort, and require little maintenance. Moreover, they operate powered by one or more electric motors that convert the stored electrical energy in rechargeable batteries into kinetic energy.
