Solid-State Batteries: The Next Leap in Electric Mobility from a Renowned Chinese Automaker

Las solid-state batteries are considered by much of the automotive industry as the great technological leap in electric mobility. On paper, they offer improvements on practically all fronts: greater safety, better performance, more range, and superior durability.

Manufacturers worldwide are competing to be the first to bring this technology to production. Some are doing so with their own projects, like Chery, while others are betting on joint developments, such as Mercedes-Benz with Factorial Energy, which is already testing initial prototypes.

Dongfeng breaks the consensus and accelerates timelines

Although most automakers agree that the mass arrival of these batteries will not occur before 2030, the Chinese company Dongfeng announced that it plans to launch a high-density solid-state battery in 2026, with production scheduled for September of that year.

This move contrasts with the caution of other manufacturers and seeks to position Dongfeng as a pioneer in a market that is still perceived as distant.

Technical characteristics of Dongfeng’s project

According to the disclosed data, the new pack would employ:

  • High-capacity ternary cathode.
  • Silicon-carbon anode.
  • Polymeric solid electrolyte.

The company claims that the battery retains more than 72% of energy even at –30 °C, improving response to extreme temperatures. With a density of 350 Wh/kg, the range would exceed 1,000 kilometers.

Additionally, Dongfeng introduced its new platform Mach Super-kV, with a 1,200-volt architecture and a silicon carbide power module. This would allow for 12C ultra-fast charging, theoretically capable of adding 450 kilometers in just five minutes.

Costs and massification strategy

The arrival of solid-state batteries is often associated with high costs and limited initial production. However, Dongfeng seeks to break that scheme with a affordable pricing strategy, both for its local market and other countries, attempting to massify a technology that many consider exclusive.

In parallel, MG adopted an intermediate stance and launched its MG4 equipped with a semi-solid-state battery, which combines traditional elements with advances typical of fully solid cells.

A market in transition and redefinition

The scenario is complicated by an additional factor: the Chinese government modified the official designation of these technologies, generating diverse interpretations and some confusion about what should be considered “solid,” “semi-solid,” or “advanced”.

The result is a market in transition, where brands seek to position themselves while the terminology and standards are still being redefined.

Signs of caution within the industry

Despite global enthusiasm and Dongfeng’s announcement, within the Chinese industry itself, there are warnings of prudence.

During the World Electric Battery Conference, leaders pointed out that mass adoption is further away than previously thought.

  • Wu Chengxin, vice president of the Collaborative Innovation Platform for solid-state batteries in China, explained that there are still key obstacles: lack of advanced scientific research, development of specialized equipment, and industrial design.
  • Deng Chenghao, vice president of Changan Automobile and president of Deepal, was even more cautious: he considered that thinking about widespread commercialization by 2030 is the best-case scenario, while a more realistic deployment might not occur until around 2035.

The message is clear: the potential of solid-state batteries is enormous, but the path to their mass use is far from immediate. While some manufacturers like Dongfeng seek to accelerate timelines and democratize the technology, others warn that commercial maturity still requires time, research, and development.

The future of electric mobility will depend on how the industry manages to overcome these challenges and turn the promise of solid-state batteries into an accessible and sustainable reality.
