Dellepiane Highway: on track to become the first “Parkway Highway”

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires is moving forward with the transformation of the Dellepiane highway into the country’s first “Park-Highway”. The project, framed within the Integrated Urban Mobility System, aims to improve connectivity in the southern area of the city through the modernization of the road infrastructure, the addition of an exclusive lane for the Metrobus, and the creation of a linear park spanning over 260,000 square meters.

The initial works are already underway on the northern and southern service roads, while Urban Highways (AUSA) has launched the bidding process for the intervention on the main route. The first phase of the project, called Section 1, covers the area between the connection with General Paz Avenue and Pola Street. In the upcoming days, Section 2 will be tendered, extending from Pola to the 25 de Mayo highway.

To ensure traffic flow during construction, the service roads will be intervened with the construction of two key bridges: one road bridge over Río Negro Street and another railway bridge over the Belgrano Sur line. These structures will allow vehicles to circulate without detours through internal neighborhood streets, addressing a longstanding issue in the area’s infrastructure.

Upon completion of these improvements, an exclusive lane for the Metrobus will be implemented in both directions. This new corridor will connect with the Metrobus on the 25 de Mayo highway and will feature elevated stations at Piedra Buena, Cafayate, Argentina Avenue, Castañares, Escalada, and Lacarra. Initially, eight bus lines will use this priority lane, in addition to long-distance buses and regular shuttle services.

According to AUSA sources, the works will have a minimal impact on daily traffic, as the more complex tasks, such as bridge installations, will be carried out during night hours.

A green space on the highway

The comprehensive plan also includes the creation of a 260,000 square meter linear park on the highway, featuring pedestrian paths, rest areas, exercise machines, and recreational spaces. In addition, urban infrastructure improvements will be implemented, such as concrete slab repairs, construction of new sidewalks and elevated crossings, and optimization of the drainage system to mitigate flooding in the Cildañez Basin.

With an investment exceeding 100 million dollars, the transformation of the Dellepiane highway aims to make it a model of sustainable mobility and integrated urban space for the residents of Lugano and Parque Avellaneda. It is estimated that the works will be completed by 2027.

What is the importance of green spaces?

Green spaces are vegetated areas, such as parks, gardens, or forests, that serve to improve people’s quality of life and are essential for cities, providing an oasis within the urban environment.

Benefits of green spaces

  • Health: They reduce stress, obesity, and the risk of type 2 diabetes. They can also prevent respiratory diseases.
  • Environment: They help reduce noise, regulate temperature, and capture pollutants.
  • Biodiversity: They increase biodiversity.
  • Sustainable development: They promote sustainable development in cities.
  • Recreation: They are places to rest, recreate, and socialize.
  • Brain development: They favor brain and cognitive development.
  • Physical activity: They encourage physical activity.

Furthermore, green spaces can reduce the ambient temperature in cities by up to 1ºC, helping to decrease the urban heat island effect and smog. Having urban environments that are 1ºC cooler helps prevent the formation of harmful ozone that spikes during intense heat episodes.
