Sustainable San Luis: Villa Mercedes opts for tire reuse in cement production

In an effort to reduce urban pollution and promote the circular economy, the Municipal Dump of Villa Mercedes (San Luis) recently removed ten tons of end-of-life tires (ELT) that were transferred to the Cementos Avellaneda plant in La Calera to be reused as alternative fuel in the cement production co-processing.

## A covenant that transforms waste into energy
The agreement with Cementos Avellaneda allows closing a sustainable cycle and reducing the environmental impact of ELTs.

For years, the Secretariat of Production, Environment and Technology has had an agreement with the cement company to ensure a safe and efficient final disposal of the tires generated in the city.

Every week, a removal schedule is carried out in local tire shops, preventing these waste from accumulating in green spaces, micro-landfills, or road sides, where they can become sources of pollution and breeding grounds for mosquitoes transmitting dengue and chikungunya.

“This strategic plan aims to close a sustainable and environmentally friendly circle,” explained the program manager of the Executive Unit.

## From rubber to cement: how co-processing works
The tires are reused as a source of heat to reach industrial temperatures without resorting to fossil fuels.

Before the transfer, the ELTs are broken down into rubber and metal, and temporarily stored in a specific area of the Dump. Then, they are loaded into trailers of up to 30 m³, equivalent to 10-12 tons, and sent to the cement plant. There, the rubber is burned to reach the 1400 °C necessary for clinker production, the main component of cement.

This method allows reducing the use of gas and other fossil fuels, decreasing costs and the environmental impact of the process.

## Environmental and health benefits of tire recycling
It avoids pollution, prevents diseases, and reduces the carbon footprint

– Reduces soil, water, and air pollution
– Prevents the proliferation of mosquitoes and rodents
– Avoids toxic fires that are difficult to control
– Preserves natural resources such as rubber and steel
– Saves large amounts of water and energy
– Reduces the carbon footprint of the industrial sector

## Circular economy and citizen participation
The municipality promotes household recycling and coordination with institutions and businesses.

In addition to the work with ELTs, the Secretariat coordinates scheduled removals of recyclable waste such as bottles and cardboard, in collaboration with organizations, businesses, and individuals.

Residents can call 147 or go to the Dump, located at Calle Ferrocarril General San Martín and Calle 89, from 9 am to 7 pm, to deliver used tires.

“We invite the entire community to join this initiative that generates a positive impact on the environment and public health,” concluded the official.
