Hot Springs of Río Jordán, the turquoise oasis of Jujuy nestled between hills and jungle, standing as a unique landscape in northern Argentina

Between reddish hills and the Yungas jungle, the Termas del Río Jordán have become one of the most sought-after natural destinations in the province of Jujuy. This circuit offers thermal pools of turquoise waters surrounded by lush vegetation and rocky walls, a true oasis for those looking to disconnect from mass tourism.

Located in the Valle Grande region, near the Calilegua National Park, the hot springs are over 1,000 meters high, in an environment of jacarandas, laurels, and mountain jungle.

Access and route

The starting point is the town of San Francisco, where visitors must register at the tourism office and hire a local guide. Trekking to the hot springs is mandatory, as the trail crosses lands of indigenous communities.

  • Distance: between 6 and 8 km per section.
  • Difficulty: medium-high.
  • Estimated time: 2 hours downhill and between 3 and 4 hours uphill with a 700-meter elevation gain.

The route crosses mountain jungle, natural viewpoints, and culminates in the thermal pools suspended between mountains.

Water characteristics

The waters of the Río Jordán have an intense turquoise hue due to their mineral composition. They maintain temperatures close to 30°C, ideal for relaxing baths. The depth varies between 40 cm and more than 2 meters, allowing for both tranquil dips and areas suitable for swimming.

A unique aspect is its seasonal nature: the hot springs can only be visited between May and November, during the dry season. In summer, the rains increase the river flow, and the thermal springs are covered by cold water.

  • San Francisco and surroundings: the Tapir Refuge, the Jaguar Fountain, and the Parrot Canyon are complementary excursions.

How to get there

  1. By car: from San Salvador de Jujuy via National Route 9 and 34 to Libertador General San Martín, then Provincial Route 83 crossing the Calilegua National Park (2 hours of gravel road).
  2. By public transport: buses from Jujuy to Libertador and then to Valle Grande, getting off in San Francisco.
  3. Guided trekking: mandatory from San Francisco, with authorized local guides.
