An environmental alert has been triggered in Paraguay due to an open-air landfill. As reported, waste is not being properly managed, raising strong concerns about health hazards and pollution.

Located 23 kilometers from Posadas, at Playa Mbói Ka’e in Encarnación, Paraguay, the landfill in question has become an “ecological disaster.” What are the authorities saying?

Environmental alarm in Paraguay: the landfill endangering health and the environment

In a special report, El Noticiero de Canal 12 accessed the site through drones. As detailed by the local media, they were able to observe the state of the landfill where domestic, industrial, and even hospital waste is deposited, without soil compaction or environmental criteria being applied.

According to the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (Mades), the landfill is authorized and obligated to compact the garbage. However, the waste continues to be open-air without any treatment.

This has raised alarm among citizens, worried about the possibility of contracting diseases due to the situation. Influenza, trichinosis, stomach problems, and other ailments could be just some of the consequences.

The civil organization Contraloría Ciudadana reported that the garbage liquids completely seep into the soil. This directly affects the community’s water resources due to the lack of leachate collection pipes.

The value of a Municipal Green Center

Perla Riveros, president of the organization, summarized the points of the complaint. “The municipal councilors, equivalent to the Deliberative Council of Posadas, traveled to the province to seek a remediation system. Here in Posadas, they have a model system for waste collection and treatment,” she stated.

“What we need to do is work together to seek the common good,” she added.

In Posadas, the Municipal Green Center is located in Nemesio Parma. It is one of the pillars of the circular economy in the province and a regional symbol.

In this context, councilors from the city of Encarnación visited the Argentine province to observe the Misiones model and replicate it in their community.

The Municipal Green Center is also a symbol of the importance of proper waste classification and understanding how this practice is essential for the conservation of natural resources and the reduction of waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Among its facilities, there is a Recyclable Sorting Plant, where recyclable materials are processed for subsequent reuse. It also deals with pruning waste and composting, transforming organic waste into substrates.
