New study on microplastics will assess water pollution in Argentina

The effects of microplastics are multiplying along with the worldwide concern they generate. Currently, there are many studies related to the contamination of these compounds in seas and oceans, but there are not as many investigations on freshwater bodies.

In Argentina, researcher María Belén Alfonso leads the project MappA (Monitoring and Analysis of Plastic Pollution in Aquatic Environments), focused on analyzing contamination by microplastics in more than 100 freshwater systems in Argentina.

This survey aims to provide key data to understand the impact of these compounds on rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, considering their effects on flora, fauna, and human health.

## Methodology and Scope of the Water Pollution Study
– **Monitored water bodies**: Rivers such as Iguazú, Paraná, and Neuquén, lakes in Patagonia, and pampean lagoons, among others.
– **Selection criteria**: Ecological importance, human consumption, recreation, productive activities, and previous records.
– **Collaborative approach**: Over 50 researchers from universities, national parks, and research centers contribute to the project.

## Impacts of Microplastics
– **On fauna**: Physical obstructions and release of toxins that can cause inflammation, reduced fertility, and developmental impact.
– **On flora**: Absorption of microplastics by roots, affecting growth, nutrient availability, and interaction with microorganisms.
– **Global context**: Studies on microplastics have increased since 2013, but freshwater environments have received less attention compared to oceans.

## Objectives and Future
The project seeks to establish a coordinated monitoring program with comparable methodologies in different ecosystems. It also aims to expand research to other countries in the southern hemisphere to understand global patterns and improve mitigation strategies.

Alfonso’s work highlights the importance of addressing microplastic pollution in freshwater environments, essential for the supply of drinking water, biodiversity, and environmental balance.
