The municipality of Nueve de Julio took a new step in its environmental policy by securing funding to continue the process of remediation and progressive closure of the open-air landfill that for years represented one of the main environmental challenges for the community.
The initiative was realized through the signing of an agreement between Mayor María José Gentile and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Services of Buenos Aires, an agreement that will allow progress in a fundamental stage of the comprehensive waste management project.
Additionally, the investment is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing environmental impacts associated with the inadequate disposal of waste and strengthening a more sustainable model for the treatment of urban waste.

A new sanitary cell to improve waste treatment
The agreement includes funding for the work called “Sanitary Cell Geomembrane Placement”, considered an essential infrastructure to optimize the final disposal of urban solid waste.
On one hand, the incorporation of geomembranes allows isolating the waste from the natural soil, preventing contaminant liquid leaks into the underground layers and reducing long-term environmental risks.
Furthermore, this intervention will facilitate a more controlled management of waste, accompanying the gradual closure process of the open-air landfill and promoting more modern standards of environmental management.
The work is part of the Municipal Infrastructure Improvement Program, promoted by the Government of the province of Buenos Aires to strengthen essential services in various Buenos Aires municipalities.
A response to a historical problem
The closure of the landfill represents one of the most significant environmental goals for Nueve de Julio, as it seeks to resolve a situation that for decades generated impacts on the soil, air, and water resources.
In this regard, the efforts made before provincial agencies allowed obtaining the necessary resources to advance in a structural and long-term solution.
On the other hand, the agreement establishes mechanisms for control, monitoring, and accountability that will allow supervising the proper use of funds and verifying the fulfillment of the planned environmental objectives.
Thus, the project consolidates a public policy focused on the protection of local ecosystems and on improving the quality of life of the population.

Environmental and social benefits of the landfill closure
The progressive closure of an open-air landfill generates multiple benefits for the environment and public health. Among them are the reduction of odors, the decrease of contamination sources, and the control of pests that can transmit diseases.
Additionally, these actions help prevent the dispersion of waste due to wind and reduce the risk of fires, a frequent problem in this type of site.
Moreover, the environmental recovery of the land allows for improving the urban landscape and creating safer spaces for nearby communities.
Furthermore, an adequate waste management promotes recycling, encourages the circular economy, and decreases the pressure on natural resources, strengthening the sustainability of cities.
The fundamental role of the community
Along with the infrastructure works, the authorities emphasized the importance of citizen participation to achieve lasting results.
In particular, the separation of waste at the source appears as a key tool to reduce the amount of waste reaching final disposal and improve the recovery possibilities of recyclable materials.
Similarly, a greater environmental awareness allows optimizing the functioning of the waste management system and enhancing the benefits of the investments made.
With this new stage, Nueve de Julio continues advancing towards a more efficient and sustainable model, focused on environmental protection, public health, and building a cleaner and more resilient city for future generations.
