A green bridge against hunger in Buenos Aires: recovered food that nourishes and cares for the planet

The Banco de Alimentos Buenos Aires presented its 2024 Report, highlighting the social and environmental impact of its work. The organization managed to reduce hunger, improve the nutritional quality of meals, and prevent massive waste through recovered food in the AMBA region.

During the past year, 360,988 people accessed food, and more than 60% were children and adolescents. At the same time, 6.7 million kilograms of food and hygiene products were rescued, which would have otherwise ended up as waste.

These supplies were transformed into more than 18 million meals, distributed among 1,280 social organizations. Dining rooms, snack bars, health centers, and educational centers were some of the spaces benefited by this solidarity network.

Another highlighted achievement was the growth in volunteering, which tripled compared to the previous year. Engaged companies, schools, and neighbors actively joined the solidarity mission.

Nutritional and Environmental Impact with a Look to the Future

In addition to increasing the quantity of food, the organization improved its quality: the nutritional value of the products delivered increased by 13%, raising the standard of food assistance.

This effort also represents a strategic environmental action, as rescuing food implies avoiding emissions associated with its decomposition or incineration. The saving of natural resources and waste reduction position the bank as a key player in the circular economy.

Since 2001, the Banco de Alimentos Buenos Aires has acted as a link between those who suffer from hunger and those who want to help. Its operations center in Benavídez allows for efficient storage, classification, and distribution of products in the capital and the suburbs.

With the motto “Less hunger, more future,” the organization promotes a sustainable aid model, where every recovered kilo is an opportunity to feed, care for, and transform lives without harming the planet.

Keys for Sustainable and Planet-Friendly Eating

Adopting a diet that benefits the environment requires making conscious decisions at every stage of consumption. Reducing waste, choosing seasonal products, and prioritizing local foods are fundamental actions. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and product preservation.

Opting for a plant-based diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, also reduces environmental impact. Plant production requires less water, land, and energy than intensive livestock farming, one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Minimizing the use of plastics and disposable packaging, as well as avoiding ultra-processed products, benefits both health and ecosystem conservation. Additionally, supporting producers who use agroecological practices or sustainable certifications is a concrete way to promote responsible food systems.

Composting organic waste, reusing leftovers, and planning purchases are habits that complete a more conscious consumption model, where eating also involves caring for biodiversity and the planet’s natural resources.
