Do you have to wash rice?: What is the key to enjoying this food without affecting health and the environment

Rice is a staple food in many cultures, known for its contribution of energy, vitamins, and minerals. However, its proper preparation still generates doubts, especially regarding the presence of arsenic.

This heavy metal can contaminate the soil or water where rice is grown and remain trapped in the grains. Although the amounts are usually minimal, there are simple ways to reduce its presence before cooking.

Rinsing the rice three to five times can eliminate up to 30% of the arsenic. If cooked with plenty of water, the percentage can reach 45%, in addition to improving the texture of the cereal.

It also reduces some of the surface starch, which influences both the cooking and digestion of the food. This makes rinsing rice a recommended practice to take care of health and the environment.

Step by step: how to effectively rinse rice

The first step is to place the rice in a large container. Then, add cold water to cover all the grains.

With your hands, gently rub to remove impurities and starch residue. The cloudy water should be discarded.

This process should be repeated three to five times until the water looks clear. Then, it is recommended to cook the rice with plenty of water, as if it were pasta.

This method not only helps reduce contaminants, but also improves the quality of cooked rice, leaving it fluffier and lighter, ideal for multiple healthy recipes.

Arsenic and starch: what you need to know

Arsenic is a natural or industrial contaminant that can accumulate in the body over time. Prolonged exposure can affect organs such as the liver, kidneys, or skin, and even increase the risk of certain types of cancer.

In the case of rice, the amounts present in normal portions are not dangerous. However, reducing its presence through rinsing is a preventive and simple way to minimize risks.

Starch, on the other hand, is a form of carbohydrate that can quickly raise blood glucose levels. Rinsing helps to remove the excess on the surface, making the rice more digestible and less likely to cause sugar spikes.

Incorporating habits like rinsing rice allows not only to improve food safety, but also to adopt a more conscious attitude regarding how we produce and consume food.
