Glass in cities represents a danger for birds resulting in millions of annual collisions. To address this issue, BirdShades has developed a solution that protects birds using ultraviolet (UV) technology to make glass visible to birds, without altering the aesthetics for humans.

## Origin of BirdShades, the Solution that Protects Birds
The idea of BirdShades was born when Dominique Waddoup, co-founder and CEO of the company, observed a glass corridor where birds constantly collided.

Motivated by these incidents, Waddoup and her team of biologists and materials scientists developed a solution that uses UV coatings to prevent bird collisions, protecting urban biodiversity without affecting the glass’s appearance.

## Invisible Protective Film
BirdShades uses a transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer coated with a water-based adhesive.

This film is only perceptible to birds, prompting them to avoid impact. Its lifespan can range from 5 to 12 years, depending on maintenance.

## Success Stories
Studies conducted at the William & Mary Integrated Conservation Institute have shown that BirdShades reduces collisions by 75-90%.

Since its launch in 2023, BirdShades has been installed in hospitals, universities, and offices in various European countries, achieving positive results. In Austria and Poland, for example, a significant decrease in collisions has been recorded.

## Protection and Energy Efficiency
In addition to protecting birds, BirdShades is developing a version of its film that incorporates a solar control system. This innovation reduces heat gain in buildings, minimizing the use of air conditioning in warmer months and achieving greater energy efficiency and a lower carbon footprint.

The technology is being developed in collaboration with ESA BIC Austria, leveraging infrared coatings created for space applications.

## Towards Sustainable Cities
Adopting solutions like BirdShades not only protects birds but also allows architects, designers, and building owners to contribute to urban sustainability.

This innovation demonstrates that it is possible to advance in architectural design without compromising nature, integrating technology harmoniously with the environment.
