Over 110 dogs found buried at a California shelter as animal cruelty investigation progresses

An investigation for alleged animal abuse keeps a shelter located in Fortuna, in the state of California, under scrutiny after authorities found remains of at least 117 dogs buried within the premises. The case has caused a strong commotion and raised new questions about the control mechanisms of establishments dedicated to animal rescue.

The operation was carried out by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, which inspected the facilities of Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary, a property of approximately 20 hectares where skulls, hundreds of bones, and other skeletal remains were also found.

The tasks continue as investigators analyze the collected evidence and reconstruct the fate of numerous animals that had been transferred to the establishment from various shelters and by individuals.

Investigators found a scenario of extreme severity

During the searches, experts identified a section inside a shed that would allegedly be the place where the animal deaths occurred. In the vicinity, more than 600 dog collars were also found, considered items of interest to the case.

Additionally, using ground-penetrating radar, specialists located 117 bodies buried in various stages of decomposition. Subsequently, some of those remains were examined with X-ray equipment.

According to preliminary examinations, projectile fragments were detected in numerous specimens, while in several cases the probable cause of death would be compatible with gunshot wounds. However, the investigation continues to determine each situation precisely.

The case continues as responsibilities are analyzed

The investigation began after receiving reports of alleged animal abuse, fraud, and other possible irregularities related to the shelter’s operation. Part of the initial information was provided by animal advocates who alerted about suspicious movements on the premises.

The complainants claimed to have detected possible burial zones using cameras installed on nearby properties. That information allowed the advancement of the first judicial search warrants that led to the discovery of the remains.

So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the responsible parties of the establishment. Meanwhile, authorities continue analyzing documentation, interviewing witnesses, and processing the large amount of evidence obtained during the raids.
