“Mexico for the Climate” took place where Daniela Vilar participated and boosted the Latin American Environmental Front

The Minister of Environment of Buenos Aires, Daniela Vilar, developed a work agenda and regional coordination after being invited by the head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, and by the Secretary of Environment, Julia Álvarez Icaza.

The purpose of the visit was to continue consolidating a Latin American Environmental Front in preparation for COP30, which will be held in Brazil in November this year.

Daniela Vilar, Minister of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires, traveled to Mexico City to participate in “Mexico for the Climate: Action Week”, an event conceived as a space for exchange and regional cooperation towards COP30.

In this context, Vilar held a meeting with Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico. During the meeting, they discussed common issues and agreed on the need to strengthen the ties of the Latin American Environmental Front in preparation for COP30.

Additionally, the minister shared the opening of the event with the head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, and was part of the panel “Latin American Synergies towards COP30”, alongside Julia Álvarez Icaza, Gabriela Rivadeneira, and Alhely Arronis.

“It is essential that we unite our voices to go to COP30 as a Latin American bloc and demand from the Global North, not access to credit and much less donations, but compensations for centuries of extractivism and exploitation of our peoples and communities,” stated Minister Daniela Vilar.

“That is the main objective of the Latin American Environmental Front that we are promoting,” she added.

As part of her institutional agenda, the Buenos Aires minister held a working meeting at the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), where she spoke with Vice Dean María Angélica Buendía Espinosa and students to plan joint environmental research projects.

She also held a meeting with the General Director of the Climate Finance Group (GFLAG), Sandra Guzmán, with whom she explored financing mechanisms aimed at environmental policies in the Province of Buenos Aires.

Vilar also met with the “Argentinos Para la Victoria“, an organization made up of Argentinians residing in Mexico who are currently carrying out the international campaign “Cristina libre”. During the meeting, participants highlighted the importance of maintaining the defense of democracy, as well as supporting the former president.

Finally, the minister participated, along with Álvarez Icaza, in the presentation of the Environmental Culture Centers of Mexico City. They also toured the Colonial Production Unit in San Francisco Tecoxpa; these are protected lands organized into agroecological cultivation ejidos for local consumption. There, they met with women producers from the agrarian nuclei of Xochimilco and San Gregorio.

The head of the Ministry of Environment of Buenos Aires emphasized that the goal is to promote the Latin American Environmental Front, which began to take shape at the Pre-COP held in July 2025 in Lomas de Zamora and is now projected more strongly towards COP30.

“We came representing the Province of Buenos Aires and Governor Axel Kicillof to continue building a firm, united, and supportive stance in international forums, expressing the territorial and community needs of our region and advancing in concrete and collaborative commitments,” Vilar emphasized.
