Milei follows Trump and considers leaving international organizations for environmental care, development, and more

In line with the controversial measure that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, defined last week, the government of Javier Milei is analyzing the abandonment of international organizations.

In particular, the United States ordered the exit from 66 multilateral entities, many of them linked to the United Nations Organization (UN).

Now, following this decision and in line with its alignment with the Trump administration, Argentina does not rule out following the steps of the United States.

This possibility, confirmed by senior officials to various national media, is under study at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed by Pablo Quirno.

The decision of the U.S. president, announced on January 7, reached multilateral organizations with agendas considered “hostile” or “ineffective” by the White House.

Among them are key entities working on climate change and environmental care, comprehensive development, or gender equality.

Trump turns his back on the UN, Milei celebrates

The news of Trump’s abandonment of international organizations even generated celebrations at Balcarce 50.

The most notable was that of presidential advisor Santiago Caputo, who shared the decision on social media.

There, he emphasized: “The world is changing radically and, this time, Argentina is a protagonist thanks to the leadership of Javier G. Milei”.

Days later, Caputo proclaimed that “the era of multilateralism has ended“.

In line with Milei’s geopolitical position, other officials also confirmed their support “for everything the United States does”.

The precedent of Argentina’s abandonment of international organizations

Argentina already set a similar precedent in February 2025, when the Government announced it would replicate the U.S. abandonment of international organizations by withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The measure was justified by “the deep differences regarding health management during the COVID-19 pandemic“, as expressed by the then presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni.

“It is urgent to rethink from the international community why supranational organizations exist, funded by everyone, that do not fulfill the objectives for which they were created,” remarked the Office of the President at that time.

Analysis at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

A senior government official confirmed to MDZ that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is analyzing all the implications that proceeding with the abandonment of international organizations would have for the country.

“Everything will be evaluated”, they noted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We do not believe in global governance organizations. If we want to be a truly sovereign country, we should not be governed by any law other than our own,” emphasized the official source.

However, the abandonment of international organizations is not easy for Argentina.

According to the official explanation, given the functioning of the current international mechanisms, withdrawing can have detrimental consequences for the country.

The main difficulties include:

  • Loss of access to IDB credits due to absence in UN commissions
  • Less influence in international decisions on environmental issues
  • Risks of diplomatic isolation in multilateral forums
  • Dependence on international relations for financing

“We live in a world colonized by China via the UN. You leave and then you can’t take a credit from the IDB because you are not in any UN commission,” exemplified a member of the president’s inner circle.

However, the same source acknowledged to MDZ the limitations of the country: “We are not the United States, it’s not that easy”.

Milei’s position against the environmental agenda

Milei has repeatedly expressed opposition to the so-called “woke agenda“, the 2030 Agenda, and banners such as the fight against climate change and gender equality, which he defined as “inventions of socialism“.

The president will revisit these topics next Wednesday during his intervention at the Davos Forum, where he will again attack the “woke agenda” and international socialism.

Although a potential abandonment of international organizations by Argentina does not seem likely to materialize in the immediate future, it is definitely on the minds of the government, which maintains its total alignment with the Trump administration.
