The Government enabled the holding of “micro-events” at Iguazu Falls: what the environmental protocol is like

The National Government authorized this week the holding of micro-events at the Iguazú Falls.

According to official statements, these will be carried out under a strict environmental protocol that will prioritize the conservation of the ecosystem.

The measure, published this Monday in the Official Gazette, establishes rigorous standards to minimize the impact on one of Argentina’s most important natural heritage sites.

The Resolution 460/2025 of the National Parks Administration allows celebrations in the National Park.

Although the measure emphasizes the need to protect the environment, it remains to be seen how these precautions will be applied in practice.

The authorities implemented the Environmental Management Measures (EMM) to ensure that the micro-events do not compromise the ecological integrity of the protected area.

The Superintendency of Iguazú National Park justified the decision by explaining that these are “small-scale activities” in areas of intensive public use.

According to the Government, this would not imply “permanent modifications nor would it generate significant environmental impacts.”

Zero Impact Protocol: the environmental priority

The regulation established the “Zero-Impact” modality as a mandatory requirement for all micro-events in Iguazú.

Under this protocol, organizers must assume exclusive responsibility for removing all waste generated during the celebrations.

Additionally, a prohibition on disposable or single-use plastics was also incorporated to prevent ecosystem pollution.

This measure aims to protect both the watercourses and the flora and fauna of the National Park.

On the other hand, the food served must be handled in conditions that prevent access by wildlife.

This restriction seeks to avoid altering the natural feeding patterns of the species inhabiting the protected area.

A Responsible Participation Protocol (RPP) was also developed, which must be imparted to all attendees at the start of each activity.

This protocol includes information about the conservation values and the main threats to the Iguazú National Park.

Restrictions on micro-events to protect Iguazú

Regarding the restrictions for holding micro-events in Iguazú, the authorities prohibited electric or battery-powered sound amplification during these events.

This measure aims to protect the fauna of the National Park, especially species sensitive to noise pollution.

The use of drones is also prohibited, except with extraordinary authorization.

This is because aerial devices can cause stress in birds and alter their natural behavior patterns in the ecosystem.

Thus, only detachable, portable, and low-impact elements are allowed.

Fixed structures, anchored to the ground or total closures of the area are completely prohibited to avoid permanent modifications to the terrain.

Regarding attendees, micro-events in Iguazú must be limited to a maximum of 60 people per celebration.

This limit responds to studies on the carrying capacity of the ecosystem in Intensive Public Use Areas.

Only two events per day will be authorized to avoid saturating the natural space. This controlled frequency allows the ecosystem to maintain its balance and regenerative capacity.

Events can only be held during the Park’s conventional hours and without restricting the movement of regular visitors.

This condition seeks to ensure that conservation and monitoring activities continue without interruptions.

Permanent environmental control of micro-events in Iguazú

“The Superintendency of Iguazú National Park will be responsible for verifying, controlling, and overseeing compliance with the established conditions,” the official resolution stated.

The Superintendency retains the power to cancel or interrupt any event for conservation reasons or non-compliance with the Environmental Management Measures. This authority ensures the immediate protection of the ecosystem in case of any irregularity.

The measure will have an exceptional and temporary validity for one year. This period will allow for the evaluation of the real impact of the micro-events and the adjustment of conservation protocols as necessary.
