The renowned Swiss sports footwear brand On, with Roger Federer as ambassador, leads an alliance in the production chain to transform carbon waste into high-performance sneaker soles.
This pioneering project is developed in collaboration with the companies LanzaTech and Borealis.
Currently, the sneakers produced using this technology have a negative carbon footprint.
Furthermore, it is projected that other footwear components will also be manufactured under this methodology in the future, promoting a higher level of sustainability.
### The process behind CleanCloud
The CleanCloud method begins with the capture of carbon emissions in industrial plants before they reach the atmosphere. This step is carried out by LanzaTech, using a technique that traps the carbon monoxide generated in facilities such as steel mills and landfills.
Subsequently, these emissions go through a specialized fermentation process. At this stage, selected bacteria transform carbon dioxide into liquid ethanol, using a natural procedure similar to that used in traditional brewing.
From ethanol, dehydration is carried out to convert it into ethylene. Borealis, a leading company in advanced plastics and sustainable solutions, is responsible for polymerizing this compound into EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), an ultralight and versatile material used to produce the CleanCloud foam, ideal for cushioning sneakers.

### Sustainability and performance united
A spokesperson stated in a press release by the company: “EVA foam was already essential to improve the cushioning of our sports shoes. Now, with CleanCloud, we elevate this performance to a new level, aligning with our sustainability values. We plan to implement it in other parts of the footwear and future products.”
On already has the Cyclon line, renowned for offering high-performance running shoes that are fully recyclable through a subscription system.
This footwear model generates 50% less carbon dioxide emissions than conventional sneakers and reduces waste by 90%, setting a new standard in the industry.
## The advantages of sustainable sneakers
Sustainable sneakers offer multiple benefits, highlighting their positive impact on the environment thanks to the use of recycled and biodegradable materials in their production and design, thus reducing waste and minimizing pollution.
Moreover, the production of this type of footwear usually requires less energy and water, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. From the consumer’s perspective, sustainable sneakers are durable and safe, avoiding harmful chemicals to the environment. Furthermore, promoting the use of this type of footwear fosters a more circular and responsible economy, contributing to the well-being of the planet.
