Composting and its benefits for the city and the environment

Most read

For some time now, composting has become one of the most popular ways to recycle organic waste, thanks to its multiple benefits. Several studies estimate that each person discards about a kilogram of garbage per day, more than half of which is organic and can be used as natural fertilizer.

In fact, composting results in compost, an organic fertilizer obtained from the controlled decomposition of food scraps, fruits, vegetables, and garden waste, through a simple technique. However, this ecological practice requires certain care and controls, such as ventilation, humidity, and temperature so that organisms like bacteria, worms, and fungi take care of the rest.

In general terms, composting can significantly benefit the city by reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the accelerated progress of climate change.

Reduces environmental impact

Composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions and the pollution that occurs when burying plastic bags or burning organic waste.

Improves soil health

Compost is a natural fertilizer that improves soil structure, its water and nutrient retention capacity, and reduces erosion.

Reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers

Compost contains macronutrients and micronutrients that plants need to grow.

Closes the organic matter cycle

By converting organic waste into compost, the organic matter cycle is closed, and its potential to return to the land is utilized.
