Oats, a cereal known for its emollient and antioxidant properties, is ideal for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. After more than 15 years of research, the plant breeding team at the Integrated Experimental Farm of Barrow (MDA-INTA) developed oats suitable for celiacs.
## Development and Characteristics
Obtained by the plant breeding and industrial quality team, the INTA Yapa Buenos Aires (Avena sativa L.) is a special oat variety, meticulously selected in the field, suitable for celiacs.
This variety stands out for its excellent grain production, intermediate cycle, and high quality for the rolled oats industry. In addition, its hectoliter weight is constant and above 50 kg/hl, and it has a high kernel content (grain without husks), a highly desired quality by the oat processing industry.
The INTA Yapa Buenos Aires has good performance against leaf diseases such as leaf rust and is moderately susceptible to stem rust. It combines its excellent quality for the industry with the possibility of obtaining unique consumer and cosmetic products for being gluten-free.
## Production and Collaboration
Through a company that processes oats, INTA has been producing and supplying Laboratorios Andrómaco with this special oat for the Aveno line for three years. In addition, a public-private agreement was signed between INTA, MDA, and Aveno to advance in a regenerative agriculture program, promoting the revitalization of soil biological processes and harmonizing agricultural production with natural dynamics.
## Public-Private Synergy
Camila Sartori, product manager at Aveno, highlighted public-private synergy as key to success, explaining that INTA and MDA provide technical knowledge and experience in agricultural research, while Aveno contributes innovation capacity and access to consumers.
## Production Process and Sustainability
Natalia Carrasco, director of the INTA unit, emphasized the strict genetic selection of oats to ensure their suitability for celiacs. Oats are produced through regenerative agriculture, focused on conserving and revitalizing soil biological processes. Carrasco ensured that the commitment to sustainability is reflected in the quality of the raw material generated.
## Transparency and Values
Sartori added that consumers demand transparency in brands, valuing the use of recyclable materials and clean production processes. With the regenerative agriculture program, the goal is to strengthen skills and competencies in future professionals and consumers regarding soil regeneration and agricultural production.
