What is climate transparency and why has it become a key to fulfilling the Paris Agreement.

Climate transparency has become a fundamental tool to assess whether countries are fulfilling their promises in the fight against climate change.

Since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, nations committed to setting emission reduction targets and reporting their progress periodically. However, given the current circumstances, it is inevitable to ask: what objectives have been achieved?

What is climate transparency and why is it key?

Climate transparency involves tracking how governments and companies meet their environmental objectives. This process is essential to build trust among nations, which experts consider crucial to halt the climate crisis.

Five key points of the climate crisis for this year. Climate transparency, a key indicator.

The Enhanced Transparency Framework is the mechanism outlined in the Paris Agreement and is central to achieving it. Through biennial reports, countries must detail:

  • Their annual emissions of greenhouse gases.
  • Plans to reduce these emissions and adapt to climate change.
  • The progress made towards their goals.
  • The support (financial, technical) needed to achieve their objectives.

These reports not only promote accountability at an international level but also provide valuable data for countries to design and implement more effective plans. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is assisting 68 nations in preparing these key documents.

The state of global climate commitments

Although climate transparency has driven many countries to strengthen their objectives, global action remains insufficient, according to statistics and reports.

These revealed that, although progress has been made in some aspects, most nations are still not on track to fully meet their promises. Emissions continue to rise in many regions, and policy implementation has been delayed.

Despite projections of global warming declining thanks to these commitments (from a 5°C increase to 2.6-3.1°C), this range is still far from the Paris Agreement goal, which aims to limit the temperature well below 2°C.

As the climate crisis worsens, it is more important than ever for countries to strengthen their reports and present more reliable data.

The coming months will be crucial, as dozens of nations are expected to submit their updated climate plans before the upcoming climate talks in Belém, Brazil.

These plans, if properly prepared and implemented, can serve as models to boost sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and improve human health.
