Stella McCartney strengthens her fight against ultra-fast fashion and warns about the need to commit to sustainability

The British designer Stella McCartney, daughter of Paul McCartney and a pioneer in ecological practices for over two decades, warned that sustainability has disappeared from the fashion agenda. In an interview with The Times, she lamented that accelerated production and mass consumption have displaced the environmental focus, just when the impact of the textile industry on the planet is more severe than ever.

“If I really wanted to be sustainable, I wouldn’t make anything,” she noted ironically, emphasizing that animal and environmental protection should be inseparable.

Recognitions and Career

In recent weeks, McCartney was distinguished as ambassador of sustainable markets by the King of the United Kingdom and received the Legion of Honor from Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, she appeared on the cover of Time and maintains her role as an advisor to the LVMH group.

Her career began in the nineties, marked by criticism and accusations of nepotism. However, she managed to consolidate her own style influenced by her mother, Linda McCartney, who left her mark on details such as denim skirts and knitwear.

The Challenge of Ultra-Fast Fashion

The rise of fast fashion has displaced environmental advances. According to the Circularity Gap Report 2024, between 2016 and 2021, global textile consumption reached 79% of all used in the 20th century. Major brands like H&M acknowledge their responsibility: Ann-Sofie Johansson stated that the goal is to invest to be part of the solution.

McCartney insists that technical innovation is key to reversing this trend. Her upcoming collection with H&M, which will launch in May, includes:

  • Organic and regenerative cotton.
  • Recycled beads and sequins.
  • Leather substitute made from recycled vegetable oil and agricultural straw.

The collaboration seeks to democratize sustainable fashion, with more accessible prices than those usually found in luxury.

Innovation in Materials

The McCartney brand has incorporated:

  • Fermented and biodegradable bioleather.
  • Mycelium fibers.
  • Plant-based alternatives to animal leather.

The designer acknowledges that these advances require additional investment: “Working sustainably costs more. Collaborating with innovators has a price.”

Economic Obstacles

Despite her leadership in sustainability, the brand faces financial difficulties. Since 2017, it has not recorded profits, and in 2024, losses before taxes reached USD 42 million, compared to 25 million the previous year.

Stella McCartney remains one of the most influential voices in sustainable fashion, denouncing the loss of environmental focus and advocating for the need to innovate in materials and processes. Her commitment to strategic collaborations and more accessible prices aims to demonstrate that sustainability should not be elitist but a path shared by the entire industry.
